Gypsum Partition Calculator: Boards, Studs and Track
A gypsum (drywall) partition is a frame of metal studs set in floor and ceiling tracks, faced with gypsum boards on one or both sides. Its quantities follow from the partition area less openings, the number of board faces, the stud spacing and the lengths in which studs and track are supplied.

Gypsum partition calculator
Floor to slab or to the ceiling it stops at.
Fire and acoustic partitions often need two.
Assumptions (edit to match your project)
Use the spacing in the board manufacturer's system specification.
Gypsum boards
13
4 × 8 ft, 2 board face(s)
Studs
13
13 stud positions
Floor and ceiling track
4
40 running ft
Partition area
179 sq ft
16.6 m², also the insulation area if specified
| Gypsum board 4 × 8 ft | 13 nos |
| Studs, 12 ft lengths | 13 nos |
| Floor and ceiling track, 12 ft lengths | 4 nos |
| Insulation (if specified) | 179 sq ft |
How this was calculated
- Area = 20 × 10 − 1 × 3 × 7 = 179 sq ft
- Boards = ceil(179 × 2 faces × 1.1 / 32) = 13
- Studs = ceil(20 / 2) + 1 + 2 × 1 doors = 13; 1 length(s) each
- Track = 2 × 20 × 1.1 / 12 = 4 lengths
- Screws, joint tape and jointing compound follow the manufacturer's rates for the system chosen.

What it calculates
For a straight run of drywall partition, the calculator gives:
- the number of gypsum boards, for the boarding chosen;
- the number of stud lengths, including door studs;
- the number of floor and ceiling track lengths;
- the partition area, which is also the insulation area if the cavity is filled.
Inputs
Partition length and height are in feet. Height is to the slab, or to the ceiling the partition stops at.
Boarded on chooses both sides, for a normal partition, or one side, for lining an existing wall.
Layers on each side is one or two.
Door openings is the number of doors in the run.
The assumptions panel holds the board size, stud spacing, the length studs and track are supplied in, the door opening size and the wastage allowance.
Method
- Area = length × height − doors × door width × door height.
- Board faces = sides × layers.
- Boards = area × faces × (1 + wastage) ÷ area of one board, rounded up.
- Stud positions = length ÷ spacing, rounded up, + 1 end stud + 2 for each door.
- Stud lengths = stud positions × (height ÷ supplied length, rounded up).
- Track = 2 × length × (1 + wastage) ÷ supplied length, rounded up.
Assumptions
| Assumption | Default | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Board size | 4 × 8 ft | Check the supplier's sizes |
| Stud spacing | 2 ft | Follow the system specification |
| Stud and track length | 12 ft | As supplied |
| Door opening | 3 × 7 ft | Change for wider or double doors |
| Wastage | 10% | Cuts around openings and at the ends |
Limitations
- Straight runs only. Corners and junctions need extra studs; add each run separately.
- Heights above the supplied stud length need joined or longer studs; the calculator counts whole lengths, which the system may not permit.
- Fire and acoustic ratings are not checked. A rating belongs to a tested system, so boards, studs, layers and insulation must match its specification.
- Openings other than doors such as glazed panels, service hatches and ducts need their own framing.
- Consumables are left out. Screws, tape, jointing compound, sealant and fixings follow the manufacturer's rates.
Worked example
A partition 20 ft long and 10 ft high with one door, single-boarded on both sides with 4 × 8 ft boards, studs at 2 ft and studs and track supplied in 12 ft lengths:
| Step | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Area | 20 × 10 − 1 × 3 × 7 | 179 sq ft (16.6 m²) |
| Board faces | 2 sides × 1 layer | 2 |
| Boards | 179 × 2 × 1.10 / 32, rounded up | 13 |
| Stud positions | 20 / 2 + 1 + 2 | 13 |
| Stud lengths | 13 × 1 | 13 |
| Track | 2 × 20 × 1.10 / 12, rounded up | 4 |
The partition needs 13 boards, 13 studs and 4 lengths of track. With two layers on each side, as a fire or acoustic partition might need, the boards rise to 25.
How engineers use it
On a fit-out, partitions are drawn as types on the layout, each with a specification: board type and layers, stud size and spacing, insulation, and the fire or acoustic rating it must achieve. Quantities are then taken off for each partition type from the drawings, including corners, junctions, deflection heads at the slab and the framing around doors and glazing.
When a professional design must replace it
Use the calculator to estimate materials or check a supplier's quantities for a simple partition. Replace it with a partition schedule and drawings before ordering, and wherever the partition must achieve a fire or acoustic rating, is unusually tall, carries heavy fixtures, or meets glazing or services. The rated system specification, not a rule of thumb, decides what is built.
