Copper Cladding — Patina Stages and Detailing

What it is
Rolled copper sheet, formed into standing seam, shingle or cassette cladding. It oxidises through a sequence of colours over years and is among the longest-lasting building metals in service.

The patina sequence

The green stage needs sustained humidity and atmospheric exposure. In dry inland Indian conditions it may never develop evenly, which is why pre-patinated sheet exists.
Detailing rules
- Nothing vulnerable downstream. No zinc, aluminium or galvanised steel anywhere copper run-off can reach.
- Copper or stainless fixings only. Any other metal in contact corrodes.
- Ventilated, drained backing, as with all metal rainscreens.
- Clips that allow movement, since copper expands significantly.
Where projects go wrong
- Copper draining onto aluminium windows — a classic and expensive error.
- Client expecting green on handover, when it is decades away.
- Steel fixings in contact with the sheet.
- Uneven weathering across an elevation because rain reaches some areas and not others; it is a real appearance risk that detailing can mitigate.
- Accessible low-level copper in locations where theft is a live risk.
