CPVC Pipe for Hot and Cold Water Plumbing

What it is
Chlorinated polyvinyl chloride pipe, solvent-welded, used for hot and cold potable water distribution. It has largely displaced galvanised iron for internal plumbing in Indian buildings.

Why it replaced GI internally
No corrosion and no scaling. A GI hot water line in hard Indian water narrows progressively with scale until flow at the far fixtures fails. CPVC does not scale in the same way, so flow stays as designed.
No galvanic issues, no threading, no rust staining at fittings.
Faster installation with solvent joints rather than threading and sealing.
The two things that get it wrong
Thermal expansion. CPVC moves considerably more than metal with temperature. A hot water run fixed rigidly at every clip will bow between supports or stress the joints. Expansion loops or offsets and correctly spaced clips are part of the design, not an optional refinement.
Cure time. Solvent cement joints reach strength over time, not instantly. Pressure testing early is the single most common cause of CPVC leaks.
Where projects go wrong
- UPVC substituted on hot lines. It softens and sags.
- Wrong solvent cement. UPVC cement on CPVC does not make a sound joint.
- Support spacing copied from metal pipe practice.
- No allowance for expansion on long hot runs.
- Pipe exposed to sunlight during storage or in service; CPVC degrades under UV and must be protected or painted where exposed.
