UPVC Pipe for Cold Water and Drainage
By Dhruv Agarwal · · 1 min read
What it is
Unplasticized polyvinyl chloride pipe — rigid, corrosion-free and inexpensive. Used for cold water supply under pressure and, in its SWR grades, for soil, waste and rainwater drainage.
Specification at a glance
| Application | Standard | Grades |
|---|---|---|
| Cold water pressure | IS 4985 | Pressure classes by working pressure |
| Soil and waste | IS 13592 | Type B, thicker wall |
| Ventilation and rainwater | IS 13592 | Type A, thinner wall |
| Max service temperature | — | Approximately 60°C |
| Jointing | — | Solvent cement, or ring seal |
Pressure pipe against drainage pipe
These are different products and the distinction gets blurred on site:
- Pressure pipe to IS 4985 is classified by working pressure and is what a cold water supply main needs.
- SWR pipe to IS 13592 is for gravity flow only. It has no meaningful pressure rating.
Putting SWR pipe on a pressurised line, or a thin Type A on a soil stack, are both substitutions that look identical once the shaft is closed.
Drainage detailing that matters
Gradient. Too flat and solids settle; too steep and water outruns the solids, leaving them behind. IS 12251 sets the practice.
Ventilation. An unvented stack siphons traps dry and lets drain odour into occupied space — a very common complaint in Indian buildings, and almost always a venting omission.
Access. Cleanouts at direction changes and at intervals on long runs, sized and positioned so they can actually be reached after the ceiling is closed.
Where projects go wrong
- UPVC on hot water. It will fail.
- Type A used for soil. Thinner wall, wrong duty.
- Long solvent-welded runs with no expansion allowance, so the pipe cracks at a joint after a few hot seasons.
- Support spacing copied from metal practice. UPVC sags.
- Stored in sun. UV degrades the pipe before it is ever installed.
