Ceramic Fritted Glass for Solar Control and Safety

What it is
Glass printed with a ceramic ink that is then fired into the surface during toughening. The ink fuses with the glass, so the pattern is permanent and integral rather than applied.
Patterns range from fine dots and lines to full opacity.

What frit is used for
Solar control without a shading device. Coverage percentage becomes a design variable you can tune per elevation — denser on west, lighter on north. Useful for reaching an ECBC SHGC target when the coating alone is not enough.
Spandrel treatment. Opaque frit conceals slab edges, insulation and shadow boxes while keeping the elevation reading as continuous glass.
Bird safety and visual manifestation. A patterned surface makes large glass areas visible, which matters on full-height glazing and at entrances.
Privacy grading. Density can be varied up a facade so lower floors are more screened than upper ones.
Where projects go wrong
- Frit specified without a coverage percentage. "Fritted glass" is not a specification; 30% and 70% behave completely differently.
- Pattern direction not set out. A linear frit has an orientation, and panels rotated on site show it immediately.
- Spandrel frit on annealed glass. Thermal stress behind an opaque panel causes breakage; heat-strengthened is the minimum.
- Frit on surface 1 where it is exposed to weather and cleaning abrasion unnecessarily.
