Acid Etched Glass — Satin Finish and Privacy

What it is

Float glass whose surface has been chemically etched to a uniform satin finish. The result diffuses light evenly while obscuring detail behind it.

It is the default privacy glass in commercial interiors.

Where it is used

Office front and meeting room partitions · door leaves and side panels · washroom and changing area screens · balustrade infill where privacy is wanted · feature walls and signage backers · shelving and light diffusers.

Film is cheapest and is what gets substituted when budget tightens. It scratches, edges lift, and it is visibly a film at close range — which in a lobby or a director's office is exactly where it is seen.

Where projects go wrong

• Sandblasted substituted for etched on a touched surface. It never looks clean again.
• Standard grade where hands touch constantly. Specify the anti-fingerprint grade on doors and office fronts.
• Privacy assumed rather than sampled. Look at a real sample at real distance under the real lighting before approving.
• Manifestation forgotten. A full-height satin panel still needs a visibility marking where people might walk into it.
