Acid etched glass is float glass whose surface has been chemically etched to a uniform satin finish that diffuses light while obscuring detail behind it. Its smooth etched surface is far easier to clean than sandblasted glass, which is why it is the default privacy glass for office fronts and meeting room partitions.

Film is cheapest and is what gets substituted when budget tightens. It scratches, edges lift, and it is visibly a film at close range — which in a lobby or a director's office is exactly where it is seen.

Where projects go wrong

  • Sandblasted substituted for etched on a touched surface. It never looks clean again.
  • Standard grade where hands touch constantly. Specify the anti-fingerprint grade on doors and office fronts.
  • Privacy assumed rather than sampled. Look at a real sample at real distance under the real lighting before approving.
  • Manifestation forgotten. A full-height satin panel still needs a visibility marking where people might walk into it.

Sandblasting abrades the surface mechanically, leaving an open, rough texture that traps dirt and shows fingerprints and grease permanently. Acid etching chemically dissolves a controlled, uniform layer, producing a smoother satin surface that is far easier to clean. On any partition people touch — office fronts, meeting rooms, doors — etched is the correct specification and sandblasted will look dirty within months.

It obscures detail but not presence and light. A person behind a satin partition reads as a soft silhouette, which is appropriate for meeting rooms and office fronts where you want visual separation without a solid wall. Where genuine privacy is required, use a double-etched or higher-opacity product, or back the glass, and confirm the effect with a sample at the actual distance and lighting.

Yes, and it should be for any partition, door or barrier application. Etching is done before toughening. Specify the safety requirement to IS 2553 Part 1 and confirm the etched face survives the toughening cycle with the supplier, because handling a finished etched surface through a furnace needs care to avoid roller marks and blemishes.
