Single or double glazed partition for a meeting room?

Single glazing is fine for visual separation — a room you can see into but do not need confidentiality in. Double glazing, with an air gap and ideally offset glass thicknesses, is what you need for a room where conversations must not carry. The mistake is specifying single glazing for an MD cabin or an HR room and then being surprised that people outside can follow the conversation.

Does glass need to be toughened?

Yes for office partitions and doors. IS 2553 governs where safety glass is required, and any full-height glazed screen or door in a circulation area falls squarely in it. Frameless doors are typically 12mm toughened, with all holes and cut-outs made before toughening — which is why hardware has to be finalised before the glass is ordered.

Why do glass rooms still leak sound even when double glazed?

Almost always the perimeter, not the glass. Sound goes over the head track into the shared ceiling plenum, under the floor, or through an unsealed junction. A double-glazed screen with an open plenum above it performs worse than a well-sealed single-glazed one. The detailing at head, base and jamb decides the result.

Where projects go wrong

Glass specified for openness, judged on privacy. Decide per room what it actually has to do before choosing the build-up.
Perimeter sealing ignored. Sound over the head track through the shared plenum defeats even good glazing.
Hardware chosen after the glass is ordered. Cut-outs are made before toughening; a late change means new glass.
Manifestation forgotten. Full-height clear glass in a circulation route is a walk-into hazard and needs visible marking.
Floor spring pocket formed badly. The most common cause of frameless doors that sag, bind or stop closing.
