What it is
Two thin aluminium skins bonded to an aluminium honeycomb core, giving a panel that is very stiff relative to its weight. The core is foil formed into hexagonal cells; the skins carry the load and the core keeps them apart.
It is the flattest large-format metal panel available in normal facade practice.

Why it gets specified
Flatness at size. A 1.5m × 3m honeycomb panel holds a flat face where the same size in 3mm solid sheet would need extensive rear stiffening and might still show waviness.
Weight. Substantially lighter than solid aluminium of equivalent stiffness, which reduces sub-frame and bracket loads on tall elevations.
Fire position. An all-aluminium build-up removes the polymer core question from the fire submission entirely.

Entrance canopies and soffits · prestige lobby and atrium linings · large flat spandrel and feature panels · column cladding on view · anywhere a designer has specified a visually seamless plane at large panel size.
What drives the cost
Skin thickness · core grade and panel thickness · finish class · panel size · edge treatment and the number of closures · curved or tapered geometry · bespoke fabrication, since honeycomb is rarely a stock item.
It sits above solid aluminium per square metre and well above ACP. The specification is justified by flatness, not by price.
Where projects go wrong
- Open edges. An unclosed cell edge takes water and dirt into the core. Every edge needs a bonded return or profile.
- Panels at impact height. A dented honeycomb panel is replaced, not repaired.
- Fixing through the panel face without a designed insert. Point loads crush the core locally.
- Assuming stock availability. These are made to order; the lead time is part of the programme, not a procurement detail.
