High Pressure Laminate (HPL) Cladding Panel

What it is

Compact laminate — layers of kraft paper impregnated with thermosetting resin, pressed under high heat and pressure into a dense, homogeneous sheet with a decorative surface. Exterior grades add a double-hardened acrylic surface layer for UV resistance.

It is specified for rainscreen cladding where a wide range of colours, wood reproductions and stone reproductions is wanted at a lower weight than stone.

Why it gets specified

Colour and pattern range. Wood and stone reproductions that hold their appearance far better than paint, at a fraction of the weight of the material being reproduced.

Dimensional stability in the panel plane compared with timber, and no corrosion path, which suits coastal and high-humidity sites where metal finish selection becomes restrictive.

Workability. It cuts and routs cleanly on standard joinery machinery, which shortens lead times on bespoke panel sizes.

The movement problem, stated plainly

HPL expands and contracts measurably with temperature and humidity — more across the sheet width than along its length. Every facade detail follows from this:

  • Fixing holes are oversized, with one fixed point per panel and the rest sliding
  • Panel joints are open, with a defined gap, never butted tight
  • Sub-frame rails must allow the panel to move without binding

Ignore this and the panel bows, the fixings elongate the holes, or the sheet cracks from a corner.

What drives the cost

Thickness · exterior versus interior grade · fire-retardant grade · decor (plain colours cost less than wood and stone reproductions) · visible versus invisible fixing, with undercut anchors adding both material and labour · panel size and cutting waste · sub-frame design.

Where projects go wrong

  • Interior grade used outside. It fades within a season or two of Indian sun. The grade must be named in the specification.
  • Fire grade left unstated. "HPL" says nothing about combustibility.
  • Fixings pinned tight. The single most common HPL failure, and entirely avoidable at detailing stage.
  • Dark colours on a west elevation. Surface temperatures climb, movement increases, and the joint gaps must be sized for it.
