What it is
Pressed aluminium or steel tiles suspended on a grid, plain or perforated, with an acoustic backing where absorption is required.

The acoustic chain
For a metal ceiling to absorb sound, all three must be specified together:
- Perforation — open area sufficient to let sound through the sheet
- Backing — fleece bonded to the tile, or a mineral wool pad above it
- Plenum — the void depth behind, which affects low-frequency absorption
Name the αw value required and let the supplier demonstrate the build-up that achieves it, rather than specifying a perforation pattern and hoping.
Where projects go wrong
- Perforated tiles with no backing, giving the look without the performance.
- Grid not levelled before tiles go in; metal shows every deviation.
- Handled without gloves. Powder-coated metal marks and the marks stay.
- Access strategy not matched to the system, so a clip-in ceiling has to be partly dismantled every time a valve needs reaching.
- Seismic and hanger requirements ignored on larger installations, where EN 13964 sets the framework.
