Laminate and Veneer for Joinery and Wall Panelling

What it is
Two different finishing materials that get specified together:
- Decorative laminate — resin-impregnated papers pressed onto a decorative surface layer, bonded to a substrate
- Natural veneer — thin slices of real timber, bonded and then finished on site or in the factory

Substrate matters as much as the face

Veneer matching
Specify the matching intent, because it must be ordered that way:
Book match mirrors alternate leaves · slip match repeats the same orientation · random match deliberately mixes for a rustic look · sequence match keeps a run continuous across several panels.
All of these require the flitch to be reserved and kept in order. None can be recovered later.
Where projects go wrong
- Unbalanced panels, which bow and twist.
- Veneer ordered piecemeal, so matching across a wall is impossible.
- MDF in humid areas, swelling at the edges.
- Fire class ignored on corridor and escape route panelling.
- Site-finished veneer in a dusty shell, which never achieves a clean finish.
