What it is
A homogeneous composite of acrylic or polyester resin with mineral filler, supplied in sheet form and fabricated into counters, desks, vanities and wall linings.

Where it earns its cost
Seamless runs. A twelve-metre reception counter with no visible joint is something only this material family does well.
Curved and formed shapes. Heating the sheet allows genuine three-dimensional forms — curved reception fronts, coved upstands, integrated bowls — without joints.
Hygiene. Non-porous with no seams, which is why it is standard in healthcare, laboratories and food preparation counters.
Repairability. Damage is sanded out rather than replaced.
Fabrication requirements
It must be fabricated by a trained fabricator with the right tooling. Inside corners need a radius, never a sharp internal angle, because sharp corners concentrate stress and crack — this is the most common solid surface failure and it is entirely a fabrication decision. Cut-outs for sinks and sockets need the same treatment.
Where projects go wrong
- Sharp internal corners at cut-outs, cracking within months.
- Inadequate substrate support, allowing slow sag in warm conditions.
- Direct heat without protection.
- Fabricated by a general joiner without the adhesive system or training.
- Colour batch mixing, which shows at seams meant to be invisible.
