Laminated vs Toughened Glass: What Happens When It Breaks

Toughened glass is heat-treated to be several times stronger than ordinary glass and breaks into small, blunt granules. Laminated glass bonds two or more panes with a plastic interlayer, so when it breaks the fragments stay stuck to the interlayer and the pane stays in place.

Common mistakes

  • Monolithic toughened glass overhead. It falls when it breaks.
  • Cutting toughened glass after treatment. It cannot be cut or drilled.
  • Ignoring laminated for barriers. An open edge at height is dangerous.
