Laminated vs Toughened Glass: What Happens When It Breaks
Toughened glass is heat-treated to be several times stronger than ordinary glass and breaks into small, blunt granules. Laminated glass bonds two or more panes with a plastic interlayer, so when it breaks the fragments stay stuck to the interlayer and the pane stays in place.

Why it matters
Glass specification is a safety decision. The question is not only how strong the glass is, but what happens after it breaks — and the answer determines where each type can legally and sensibly be used.

Common mistakes
- Monolithic toughened glass overhead. It falls when it breaks.
- Cutting toughened glass after treatment. It cannot be cut or drilled.
- Ignoring laminated for barriers. An open edge at height is dangerous.
