Why is PEB the default for warehouses and factories?

Because it delivers large column-free spans quickly and economically. Tapered frames put steel only where the load needs it, fabrication happens in a controlled shop while the civil foundations are being built on site, and erection is fast once the anchor bolts are ready. For a shed that is mostly open floor with a roof over it, very few systems compete.

How long does a PEB warehouse take?

Fabrication can run in parallel with foundation work, so the site programme is driven mainly by foundations, erection and cladding. The real variables are design freeze, steel procurement, and whether the civil works are ready when the steel arrives. A project where frame design and foundations are coordinated from the start moves far faster than one where they are handled by different parties.

What about fire safety in a large shed?

Industrial and storage occupancies carry specific requirements under NBC 2016 Part 4 depending on what is stored and how — high-bay racking and combustible goods raise them considerably. Hydrant, sprinkler and detection requirements should be established before the building is designed, because they affect roof height, water storage and pump room space.

Where projects go wrong

Steel arrives before foundations are ready. Erection stalls and the steel sits in the open.
Grade slab designed without racking loads. High-bay racking concentrates large point loads on the floor.
Fire requirements set after the design. Sprinklers and hydrants change the roof height, water storage and pump room.
Ventilation and daylighting ignored. Large sheds without them are hot and dark and need lighting all day.
Drainage undersized. A large roof collects a great deal of water in a monsoon downpour.
