Healthcare MEP is the power, air, water and fire services for hospitals, clinics and diagnostic centres, across areas such as operation theatres, ICU, emergency and patient rooms. Unlike office MEP it is designed around redundancy, controlled air movement between zones and continuity of supply, because failures carry clinical consequences.

Where projects go wrong

  • Treating a hospital like a large office. The redundancy and zoning requirements are fundamentally different.
  • Critical areas without continuity of supply. Power and air to OT and ICU must survive a single failure.
  • Pressure relationships between zones not maintained. Air moving the wrong way between clean and dirty areas defeats infection control.
  • Live-facility work without infection-control barriers. Construction dust in a clinical area is a patient-safety issue.
  • Equipment requirements confirmed late. Imaging and theatre equipment bring specific power, cooling and structural needs that must be designed in.

Because the consequences of failure are clinical, not just uncomfortable. A power interruption in an ICU, a pressure reversal in an operation theatre or a water supply issue in a sterile area affects patients directly. Hospital MEP is designed around redundancy, controlled air movement between zones, and continuity of supply to critical areas — none of which an office needs.

Yes, and much healthcare work is exactly that — expansions and upgrades in a live facility. It requires strict phasing, infection-control barriers between the work zone and clinical areas, dust and noise control, and shutdowns planned with the hospital around clinical schedules. It is slower and more expensive per square foot than new build, and the method matters as much as the design.
