PVB Interlayer in Laminated Safety Glass

What it is
Polyvinyl butyral, a tough plastic interlayer bonded between glass panes under heat and pressure. When the glass breaks the interlayer holds the fragments in place, which is what makes laminated glass a safety product.

Why the interlayer is the specification
Two laminated panes with identical glass can behave completely differently:
- 0.38mm — basic fragment retention
- 0.76mm — the workhorse for safety glazing, barriers and overhead
- 1.52mm and above — higher impact, security and acoustic duty
- Acoustic grade — measurably better sound damping at traffic frequencies
- Ionoplast — a different polymer entirely, far stiffer, for structural use
Naming only "laminated" gets you the cheapest of these.
Where it matters most
Barriers and balustrades. If a toughened pane in a barrier fails, the interlayer is the only thing keeping the barrier standing. This is a life safety function, not a finish.
Overhead and skylight glazing, where a failed pane must not fall.
Acoustic facades on road-facing elevations.
UV protection for retail displays and interiors, where PVB blocks nearly all UV and limits fading of finishes and merchandise.
Where projects go wrong
- Interlayer thickness unstated.
- Standing water at the pane edge from an undrained rebate, causing delamination.
- Standard PVB where acoustic was intended — visually identical, acoustically not.
- Cutting laminated glass on site. It cannot be cut cleanly after lamination; sizes must be right at order stage.
