What it is
Large-format porcelain panels, typically 3mm to 20mm thick, hung mechanically on a ventilated facade. Manufactured stone and concrete reproductions have made it a direct alternative to natural stone cladding.

What the specification must cover
Panel size and thickness · back-mesh reinforcement requirement · fixing system and whether anchors are undercut or clip · rail layout and wind pressure from IS 875 Part 3 · joint width · edge and corner details, which are the visible weak point of any large-format tile facade.
Where projects go wrong
- Adhesive fixing above low level. The bond is uninspectable and the failure mode is a panel falling.
- No back reinforcement on large panels.
- Rail spacing set by convenience rather than wind calculation.
- Interior-grade tile specified for a facade; the two are not the same product.
- Corner details left to site. Mitred porcelain corners are fragile and need designed protection.
