Raft vs Pile Foundation: How Soil Decides
A raft foundation is a single thick reinforced slab spreading the building's load across the whole footprint on soil near the surface. A pile foundation carries load down through long columns into deeper, stronger strata. Which one a building needs depends on the soil and the loads.

Why it matters
Foundations are the most expensive part of the building to get wrong, because they cannot be corrected once the structure sits on them. The choice between footings, raft and piles is a soil question — and answering it without a proper investigation means guessing with the whole building.
