Rainscreen Ventilated Facade: Why the Cavity Does the Work
A rainscreen ventilated facade hangs an outer skin of panels in front of an insulated, weatherproofed wall with a deliberate air gap between them. The outer panel sheds most of the rain; the drained and ventilated cavity behind handles whatever gets past it.

Why it matters on a facade project
Ventilated rainscreen is the default for stone, terracotta, HPL, fibre-cement and metal cladding on Indian commercial buildings — and it works on a principle that surprises people the first time they hear it: the outer skin is not waterproof, and is not meant to be.
Understanding that changes how the system gets detailed. The panel is a screen. The membrane behind it is the weather line. Most rainscreen failures come from teams treating the panel as the barrier and the membrane as an afterthought.

Common mistakes
- Omitting or shortcutting cavity barriers. The cavity is continuous by design. Without barriers at each compartment line it becomes a route for fire and smoke, which is the exact mechanism that made cladding fires catastrophic.
- Treating the membrane as secondary. If it is discontinuous at a corner, a penetration or a lap, the building will leak regardless of panel quality.
- Blocking the ventilation path. Insulation pushed into the cavity or sealed-off openings stop the airflow, and the cavity stops working.
- Thermal bridging at the brackets. Hundreds of metal brackets through the insulation can undo the assembly's U-value. Thermally broken brackets or isolation pads matter more than most specifications assume.
- Combustible insulation behind a combustible panel. Each may pass in isolation; together in a ventilated cavity they are a different proposition.
