# Architectural Elements — Canopies, Pergolas, Skylights, Balusters

> Canopies, pergolas, skylights and balusters are bespoke architectural elements that mostly project, cantilever or sit overhead, so on canopies and pergolas wind uplift, not downward load, is usually the governing case. Skylights and other overhead glazing use laminated glass, which holds the fragments if a pane fails, along with a planned drainage and condensation route.

## What we deliver

**Canopies, balusters, pergolas and skylights** — bespoke architectural
elements fabricated in-house and coordinated with the surrounding envelope.

These are the elements that give a building its character at eye level, and the
ones most often left to be resolved late. They are also structurally awkward:
almost all of them project, cantilever or sit overhead, which puts them in the
load cases where facade work most often goes wrong.

## Scope of works

| Stage | What we deliver |
| --- | --- |
| Design development | Working from the architect's intent to a buildable assembly |
| Structural design | Uplift and cantilever analysis to IS 875 Pt 3, connection design |
| Drainage strategy | Falls, gutters, outlets and condensation control on glazed elements |
| Fabrication | In-house cutting, routing, welding and finishing |
| Installation | Setting out, structural fixing, glazing, sealing |
| Handover | Water testing, inspection, snagging |

## Element notes

| Element | The governing issue |
| --- | --- |
| Entrance canopy | Wind uplift on the cantilever; drainage away from the entrance |
| Skylight | Laminated glass overhead; condensation collection; thermal movement |
| Pergola | Uplift on an open frame; connection back to structure |
| Balusters | Imposed handrail load; base fixing into the slab |

## What drives the cost

Span and cantilever length · glass build-up on skylights and glazed canopies ·
structural steel or aluminium framing · finish class — anodised or PVDF powder
coat · drainage complexity · geometry, since curved and faceted forms cost
substantially more than orthogonal.

## Where projects go wrong

- **Designed for downward load only.** Uplift usually governs on projecting
elements, and it is the load case most often missed.
- **Monolithic toughened glass overhead.** If it fails, the fragments fall.
Laminated is the only acceptable specification.
- **Drainage as an afterthought.** A canopy that sheds water onto the entrance
steps is a slip hazard and an obvious defect.
- **Condensation ignored on skylights.** Warm humid interior air against cold
glass produces water. It has to be collected, not left to drip.
- **Late structural coordination.** Cantilevered elements need fixings designed
into the primary structure, not drilled in afterwards.

## Why Hagerstone

**Bespoke work on our own line.** Approximately 9,000 sq ft of fabrication
capacity with CNC-grade machinery and in-house welding, so architectural
geometry is built rather than substituted for the nearest catalogue product.

**One team across the envelope** — canopies, glazing, cladding and railings
detailed together, so the junction where an element meets the facade is not an
interface between two contractors.

**79+ quality checkpoints** under ISO 9001 / 14001 / 45001, with work-at-height
and lifting safety covered by our HSE system.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why do canopies fail more often than facades?

Because of uplift. A projecting horizontal element sees suction from below as well as pressure from above, and the net uplift on a cantilevered canopy is frequently the governing load case. Canopies designed for downward load — snow, maintenance, self-weight — and not for uplift are the ones that lift or deform in a storm. IS 875 Part 3 treats projecting elements specifically for this reason.

### What glass goes in an overhead skylight?

Laminated, without exception, for anything glazed overhead. If a pane fails, the interlayer holds the fragments rather than dropping them into occupied space below. Typical build-ups use toughened outer and laminated inner. Skylights also need a drainage and condensation strategy — warm humid air rising against cold glass produces water that must be collected and led away, not left to drip.

### Can these be fabricated to a bespoke architectural design?

Yes — this is essentially bespoke work, which is why it runs through our own fabrication line rather than a catalogue. In-house cutting, routing, crimping and welding lets us build to an architect's geometry, and having the same team detail the surrounding facade means the junction where the element meets the building is one party's responsibility.
