# TPO and PVC Single Ply Roof Membranes

> A single ply roof membrane is one layer of flexible polymer sheet, TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) or PVC, laid over a roof deck and insulation with its seams fused by hot air welding into one continuous material. TPO suits general commercial roofs; PVC resists chemicals and grease better, so it is used over kitchens and chemical exposure.

## What it is

A **single layer of flexible polymer sheet** — TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin)
or PVC — laid over a roof deck and insulation, with seams joined by hot air
welding.

## Specification at a glance

| Property | Typical specification |
| --- | --- |
| Standard | EN 13956 |
| Thickness | 1.2mm — 2.0mm |
| Reinforcement | Polyester scrim for dimensional stability |
| Seams | Hot air welded, tested |
| Attachment | Mechanically fastened, fully adhered, or ballasted |
| Reflectance | High for white membranes; stated SRI |

## TPO against PVC

| | TPO | PVC |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Chemical resistance | Good | Better, especially to grease |
| Plasticiser migration | None | Can stiffen over decades |
| Weldability | Good | Excellent, wider window |
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
| Typical use | General commercial roofs | Kitchens, chemical exposure |

## Where roofs actually fail

Not in the middle of the sheet. They fail at **penetrations, upstands and
terminations** — pipe and duct penetrations, parapet upstands, outlets and
junctions with vertical surfaces.

Which means the specification must cover the detail components: prefabricated
corners, pipe boots, termination bars, sealant at the top edge, and a drainage
design that keeps water moving to the outlets instead of ponding.

## Where projects go wrong

- **Seams welded in poor conditions** without probe testing afterwards.
- **Penetrations detailed on site** rather than with prefabricated components.
- **Ponding water** from an inadequate fall, which shortens membrane life and
  finds any weak seam.
- **Fastener pattern uniform** across the roof, ignoring higher uplift at
  perimeters and corners.
- **Incompatible materials in contact.** Some insulation facings and bitumen
products attack these membranes; compatibility must be confirmed.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why are welded seams better than adhesive laps?

A hot air weld fuses the two sheets into one continuous material, so the seam is as strong as the membrane itself and does not depend on an adhesive that ages. Adhesive and taped laps rely on a bond that degrades under heat and movement, and laps are where flat roofs leak. On a welded system the seam stops being the weak point, which is the main reason single ply displaced older built-up systems.

### Does a white membrane actually help in India?

Yes, measurably. A highly reflective white membrane keeps roof surface temperatures far below a dark one, cutting heat flow into the building and reducing cooling load, and ECBC 2017 recognises roof reflectance for exactly this reason. The benefit depends on the roof staying reasonably clean, so the maintenance regime matters — a neglected white roof in a dusty industrial area loses part of the advantage.

### How is the membrane held down?

Mechanically fastened through the membrane into the deck at laps, fully adhered to the substrate, or ballasted with gravel or pavers. The choice follows from the wind uplift calculated under IS 875 Part 3, the deck type and whether the roof is trafficked. Mechanically fastened is common and economical; fully adhered suits exposed high-uplift zones where fastener patterns would become impractical.
