# Standing Seam Roof Sheet — Concealed Fix Roofing

> Standing seam roofing is a metal roof system whose sheets are joined by raised interlocking seams and held by concealed clips fixed to the purlins, so no fastener passes through the weather surface. Its sliding clips let the sheet move with temperature, which suits long-span roofs where leaks are unacceptable and access for repair is hard.

## What it is

A metal roof system where sheets are joined by **raised interlocking seams** and
held by **concealed clips** fixed to the purlins. No fastener passes through the
weather surface.

It is the specification for long-span industrial and commercial roofs where
leaks are unacceptable and the roof is hard to access for repair.

## Specification at a glance

| Property | Typical specification |
| --- | --- |
| Substrate | Galvalume to IS 15961, coating mass stated |
| Seam | Snap-lock or mechanically seamed |
| Clips | Concealed, sliding for thermal movement |
| Sheet length | Long lengths, often roll-formed on site |
| Minimum slope | Per manufacturer; lower than screwed profiles |
| Insulation | Over-purlin with spacer, or insulated panel |

## Why it wins on long-span roofs

**No penetrations** in the weather plane, removing the primary leak path.

**Movement accommodated**, not resisted, which matters when a sheet run is
tens of metres long and the roof surface swings through a wide temperature
range daily.

**Long sheets**, often roll-formed at ground level on site, which removes end
laps — the second most common leak location after fasteners.

**Cleaner appearance** on visible roofs and canopies.

## What drives the cost

Coating mass and paint system · sheet thickness · seam type, with mechanically
seamed above snap-lock · clip type and spacing, which follows wind uplift under
IS 875 Part 3 · site roll-forming set-up · roof geometry and the number of
penetrations, hips and valleys.

## Where projects go wrong

- **Clip spacing uniform across the roof.** Edges, corners and ridges see much
higher suction and need closer spacing.
- **Clips fixed so the sheet cannot slide**, defeating the whole system.
- **Slope below the manufacturer's minimum** for the chosen seam.
- **Penetrations cut without designed flashings**, reintroducing exactly the
leak paths the system exists to avoid.
- **Gutters undersized.** A large roof sheds a great deal of water very quickly
  in monsoon conditions.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why is standing seam better than screwed trapezoidal sheet?

Because there are no fasteners through the weather surface. Every screw through a trapezoidal sheet is a hole sealed by a washer, and washers age, compress and eventually leak — which is why most industrial roof leaks are at fasteners. Standing seam clips sit under the seam and hold the sheet without piercing it, so the roof has no penetrations except where services genuinely pass through.

### How does it handle thermal movement?

That is one of its main advantages. A long metal roof sheet in Indian sun expands and contracts measurably along its length. Standing seam clips are designed to let the sheet slide, so the movement is accommodated rather than resisted. A screwed sheet fixed rigidly at every purlin fights that movement, which elongates the holes and is a second common leak mechanism.

### What is the minimum roof slope?

Standing seam works at lower slopes than screwed profiles, and mechanically seamed systems can go to roughly 1.5 degrees where the manufacturer confirms it. The lower the slope, the more critical the seam type, end lap detailing and gutter sizing become. Below the manufacturer's stated minimum the system is not warranted, regardless of how the detail looks.
