# Aluminium Honeycomb Panel for Flat Facades

> An aluminium honeycomb panel is two thin aluminium skins bonded to a core of aluminium foil formed into hexagonal cells, making it very stiff for its weight. It is specified over ACP or solid sheet for flatness at large panel sizes, and its all-aluminium build-up has no polymer core.

## What it is

Two thin aluminium skins bonded to an **aluminium honeycomb core**, giving a
panel that is very stiff relative to its weight. The core is foil formed into
hexagonal cells; the skins carry the load and the core keeps them apart.

It is the flattest large-format metal panel available in normal facade
practice.

## Specification at a glance

| Property | Typical specification |
| --- | --- |
| Skins | 0.5mm — 1.0mm aluminium to IS 737 |
| Core | Aluminium honeycomb, cell size by grade |
| Total thickness | 10mm — 25mm typical |
| Fire class | High classification; mineral throughout |
| Finish | PVDF coil coating or anodised |
| Edge | Bonded return or closed edge profile, always |

## Why it gets specified

**Flatness at size.** A 1.5m × 3m honeycomb panel holds a flat face where the
same size in 3mm solid sheet would need extensive rear stiffening and might
still show waviness.

**Weight.** Substantially lighter than solid aluminium of equivalent stiffness,
which reduces sub-frame and bracket loads on tall elevations.

**Fire position.** An all-aluminium build-up removes the polymer core question
from the fire submission entirely.

## Where it belongs

Entrance canopies and soffits · prestige lobby and atrium linings · large flat
spandrel and feature panels · column cladding on view · anywhere a designer has
specified a visually seamless plane at large panel size.

## What drives the cost

Skin thickness · core grade and panel thickness · finish class · panel size ·
edge treatment and the number of closures · curved or tapered geometry ·
bespoke fabrication, since honeycomb is rarely a stock item.

It sits **above solid aluminium** per square metre and well above ACP. The
specification is justified by flatness, not by price.

## Where projects go wrong

- **Open edges.** An unclosed cell edge takes water and dirt into the core.
Every edge needs a bonded return or profile.
- **Panels at impact height.** A dented honeycomb panel is replaced, not
  repaired.
- **Fixing through the panel face** without a designed insert. Point loads
  crush the core locally.
- **Assuming stock availability.** These are made to order; the lead time is
part of the programme, not a procurement detail.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why specify honeycomb over ACP or solid aluminium?

Flatness at large panel sizes. The honeycomb core gives very high stiffness for its weight, so a large panel stays visually flat where ACP or thin solid sheet would oil-can. On prestige lobbies, entrance elevations and any surface read in raking light, that flatness is the reason the cost is accepted.

### Is the honeycomb core combustible?

The core is aluminium foil, so the panel is mineral throughout and achieves a high reaction-to-fire classification under EN 13501-1. This is a genuine difference from polyethylene-cored ACP. The ventilated cavity behind the panel still requires cavity barriers and non-combustible insulation, because the cavity is a fire path independent of the panel.

### What is the main risk with honeycomb panels?

Edge exposure and impact. The open cell structure must be closed at every edge with a bonded return or edge profile, or water and dirt enter the core. The panel is also not repairable after a sharp impact in the way a solid sheet is, so it belongs above impact height or in protected locations.
