# Wet Riser: The Firefighting Pipe Inside Tall Buildings

> A wet riser is a vertical pipe permanently filled with pressurised water, running up a building with landing valves at each floor, so firefighters can connect hoses on the fire floor instead of laying them up the stairs. It is fed from the building's fire pumps and tank.

## Why it matters

On a tall building, carrying hose up many floors wastes the minutes that matter.
A wet riser puts pressurised water at every floor, ready to connect, which is why
it is a standard provision on multi-storey buildings.

## How it works in practice

| Component | Role |
| --- | --- |
| Riser pipe | Vertical charged pipe through the building |
| Landing valves | Hose connections at each floor |
| Hose reels | First-aid firefighting for occupants |
| Fire pumps | Keep the riser pressurised |
| Fire service inlet | Allows the fire tender to boost supply |

## Common mistakes

- **Riser in an unprotected location.** Valves should be accessible from a
  protected area.
- **Pressure not tested.** Hydrostatic testing proves the system holds.
- **Valves obstructed.** Fit-outs sometimes block landing valve access.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the difference between a wet and a dry riser?

A wet riser is always charged with water under pressure from the building's pumps. A dry riser is empty until the fire service pumps water into it from outside through an inlet at ground level. Wet risers give water immediately; dry risers depend on the fire tender.

### Where are landing valves located?

Typically in or next to the protected staircase or fire-fighting lobby on each floor, so firefighters can connect in a protected area and advance onto the floor.
