# Raft vs Pile Foundation: How Soil Decides

> A raft foundation is a single thick reinforced slab spreading the building's load across the whole footprint on soil near the surface. A pile foundation carries load down through long columns into deeper, stronger strata. Which one a building needs depends on the soil and the loads.

## Why it matters

Foundations are the most expensive part of the building to get wrong, because
they cannot be corrected once the structure sits on them. The choice between
footings, raft and piles is a soil question — and answering it without a proper
investigation means guessing with the whole building.

## How it works in practice

| Foundation | Carries load | Suits |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Isolated footing | Directly under each column | Good soil, moderate loads |
| Raft | Across the whole footprint | Heavy loads, moderate soil |
| Pile | Down to deeper strata | Weak surface soil, heavy loads |

## Common mistakes

- **No soil investigation.** The foundation is then designed on assumption.
- **Copying the neighbouring building's foundation.** Soil varies across short
  distances.
- **Ignoring the water table.** It affects excavation, waterproofing and design.

## Frequently asked questions

### When is a raft used instead of isolated footings?

When column loads are heavy relative to the soil's bearing capacity, so individual footings would be so large they almost touch, or when differential settlement between footings is a concern. Spreading the load as one slab reduces pressure and evens out settlement.

### When are piles needed?

When the soil near the surface is too weak or compressible to carry the load, or when heavy loads, a high water table or expansive soils make shallow foundations unsuitable. Piles transfer load to firmer strata below.
