# Curtain Wall Brackets: How a Facade Hangs on the Building

> Curtain wall brackets are the steel or aluminium anchors that connect the facade to the building's slab edges. They carry the facade's weight and wind load into the structure, and they are adjustable in three directions so the facade can be set true against a structure that is never perfectly built.

## Why it matters

Every kilogram of facade and every gust of wind passes through the brackets. They
are small, hidden and repeated hundreds of times, and a design or installation
error in them repeats across the whole building.

## How it works in practice

| Function | Detail |
| --- | --- |
| Dead load | Carries facade weight into the slab |
| Wind load | Resists positive and negative pressure |
| Adjustment | Up/down, in/out, side to side |
| Movement | Allows for thermal and structural movement |
| Isolation | Separates dissimilar metals to prevent corrosion |

## Common mistakes

- **Skipping the slab-edge survey.** Tolerance problems appear only when panels
  arrive.
- **Rigid connections everywhere.** The facade must accommodate movement.
- **Dissimilar metals in contact.** Galvanic corrosion at hidden connections.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why do brackets need adjustment?

Concrete slab edges are never built exactly to drawing — they vary in level, line and projection. Brackets adjustable in all three directions let the facade be installed straight and plumb regardless, within the designed tolerance.

### What is a slab-edge survey?

A survey of every slab edge before bracket installation, comparing the as-built structure to the drawings. It shows where tolerance will be exceeded, so problems are solved on paper instead of discovered when panels do not fit.
